About Our Counselors and Staff

Ms. Retina Bowen, Counselor

I have had the pleasure of working as a school counselor for the Vallejo Unified School District since 1993 at the elementary and secondary levels.  Prior to my coming to VCUSD, I worked as a community college counselor for several years.  I earned my BA degree from CSU Chico and my MS degree from the University of LaVerne.  I have been a member of the Jesse Bethel family and community since 1999. I have witnessed and participated in Bethel's postive growth, changes and improvements campus wide.  In the counseling office we have established a dedicated team of counselors and support staff who are committed to student success.  Our goal is to empower our students with knowledge, resources and options regarding their academics, college and career choices that can lead them to a successful future.

Mr. Dwayne Jones, Counselor

Born and raised in Vallejo, I am the proud parent of Dwayne Jones Jr. I am very elated to come back to the community as a role-model. I am an advocate and true believer of “All kids can learn and achieve their goals regardless of where they come from”. My goal as a counselor is to have 100 percent of my Law Academy students Four-Year University College bound by the time they graduate from Jesse Bethel High School. I received my Masters of Science degree in Counseling with a Clear PPS Credential from San Francisco State University. This will be my 18th year in the Vallejo city Unified School District. I spent six years at Solano Middle school, six years at Hogan High school, one year at Vallejo High School, and this will be my fifth year at Jesse Bethel High School. My role as a counselor has allowed me to use my expertise in helping underperforming students graduate on time and achieve their goals. I was the first Boys Basketball coach at Jesse Bethel High School and have won 4 league titles in 2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2011-2012, and 2012-2013 and was named Coach of the Year four times.

Mr. Maurice Udobia, counselor

My name is Maurice Udobia, I am from a country known as Nigeria in Africa. Nigeria is situated in the west part of Africa. The land is very rich in mineral resources. Growing up as a kid, my goal was to become a professional soccer player. After my high school graduation, I was called upon to the Nigerian national soccer team to represent my country in soccer. During my soccer career, I have played in five different professional teams in Nigeria before proceeding to play professionally in Spain.
I spent two years in Spain playing professional soccer. In 1993, I immigrated to America. When I arrived in this great country, soccer was not a big deal so I started going to school to complete my education. I went to Mission College in Santa Clara, then Evergreen College in San Jose. I completed my Bachelors degree from St. Mary’s College Moraga then proceeded to National University to complete my Masters in Educational Counseling. Today, I am a counselor and a soccer coach at Bethel High School.
